The M-A Arete Scholarship Award is given to a graduating senior and student athlete at Menlo-Atherton High School in Menlo Park, CA whose excellence of effort, spirit and determination inspires respect for the good struggle and the true athlete. This award honors that student athlete who may not always win but who never gives up, and whose excellence of effort in academics and sport deserves our recognition and support.

In the world of ancient Greek athletics, the word "Arete" implied excellence as well as virtue. In one’s daily life as in one’s athletic endeavors, one was able to show his or her arete. Although the word arete may be absent from our modern vocabulary, it has not gone out of play.
